Some interesting Worldwide Polio information.

Vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (VDPV2) detected in environmental samples in London, UK

Today, the Global Polio Laboratory Network (GPLN) has confirmed the isolation of type 2 vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV2) from environmental samples in London, United Kingdom, which were detected as part of ongoing disease surveillance.  It is important to note that the virus has been isolated from environmental samples only – no associated cases of paralysis have been detected.  Recent coverage for the primary course of DTaP/IPV/Hib/HepB vaccination, which protects against several diseases including polio, in London suggests immunization coverage of 86.6%.  While this is a scary finding, it also points to the importance of high quality surveillance .

Racing to End Polio

Team Rotary RAAMs Polio as the amazing Kurt Matzler solo races his bicycle across the United States.  He had ridden 2,152 miles and climbed 53,984 feet since he left the California coast Saturday afternoon. 

 
Status of the two remaining Polio Endemic Countries
 
Pakistan 
Two new Wild Polio cases reported this week. Eight Wild Polio cases reported in 2022.  The most recent case had an onset of paralysis on 5/01/22.  Pakistan reported 1 Wild Polio case in 2021. One WPV1 Positive Environmental Sample was reported this week in Pakistan.  
 
Afghanistan 
No new Wild Polio cases reported this week.  One Wild Polio Case reported in 2022 . Four Wild Polio cases reported in 2021  The most recent case had an onset of paralysis on 1/11/22. Afghanistan reported 56 Wild Polio cases in 2020. No WPV1 or cVDPV2 Positive Environmental Samples were reported this week in Afghanistan.
