End Polio No on the Today Show
Vaccine Derived Poliovirus - Trivalent Oral Polio Vaccine contains weakened forms of all three strains of Poliovirus (Types 1,2, & 3). Type 2 Wild Poliovirus was eradicated in 1999 and several countries are now working to destroy or safely contain the Type 2 virus they possess. The Type 2 strain is no longer needed to protect children from Wild Polio, but still causes 90% of the vaccine derived Polio cases. The global switch to the Bivalent Oral Polio vaccine (without Type 2) early next year, will greatly reduce the risk of vaccine derived cases.
Pakistan - One new Polio case reported in Pakistan this week. Forty-one Polio cases have been reported in 2015 compared to 259 at this time, last year. Two new Polio positive environmental samples were collected this week.
Afghanistan - No new Polio cases reported in Afghanistan this week. One new Polio-positive environmental sample was collected this week. Sub-National Immunization Days are Underway 11/29-12/1 using Bivalent OPV in the south and east of the country.
