ROTARY READING VOLUNTEERS

Here are some general tips to guide you.

1.  If the child has previously read the book ask him/her to tell briefly
what the story was about. If the book has not been read begin at step 4.

2.  Choose a couple pages in the beginning, middle and end of the book.
Ask the child to read these aloud.  After each section ask questions to check
for understanding.  (suggested questions attached)

3.  If the child has trouble with the selected pages (reads haltingly, misses
several words, doesn't understand what was read) start again at the beginning.

4.  If starting a book new to the child, ask the child to predict what the
book will be about. Talk about the title or the colorful illustrations to
motivate the child to want to read the story.

5.  Help the child decode unfamiliar words rather than just telling him/her.
Use letter sound relationships, word patterns, small words within larger words,
context clues (what word would make sense in this sentence) and picture clues.
Once the word is established have the child reread the entire sentence 2-3 times
until there is a smooth reading flow.  Repetition creates fluency so it is good to
have sentences, paragraphs and pages reread.

6.  Demonstrate for the child how to read with expression (if you are
comfortable doing so) . Then have the child imitate you.

7.  Congratulate the child on working hard and /or doing a good job. Tell them you look forward to seeing them again.
