Polio this week as of  28 December 2016

  • In 2016 to date, 35 children have been paralyzed due to wild poliovirus, fewer than in any preceding year. However, eradication requires reaching zero. Poliovirus survives in a limited number of places, with decreasing genetic diversity; the eradication programme continues to intensify its efforts to reach every child.

Khaksar’s family knew something was wrong when his fever didn’t break.

The 12-month-old wailed uncontrollably, tears streaming from his big brown eyes. His father visited a doctor in their lush, battle-scarred valley in eastern Afghanistan. But the pills he brought home did nothing.

 
 
 

As a writer for Rotary International, I’m always looking for metaphors and similes, especially in unfamiliar places, always searching for the right phrase to carry a story about the work done by Rotary members.

On my first Rotary trip to India with Rotary Ambassador Minda Dentler to see the work of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in action, my task was easy, for in its sights, objects and even signs, rich metaphors are on frank display.....
