It is my pleasure to serve you during the Rotary Year 2015-16 as District Governor. Our theme from our Rotary International President K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran is “Be a Gift to the World." Over the past two years of training by Rotary International, Zone 21B/27 Leadership, and the insight of Past District Governors to hold this position, I have come to appreciate the dedication of the previous District Governors in their efforts in building the great Rotary District 5790. My hope is to build on the foundation that has been laid before me, so I need your help and assistance as we progress into this year.
Our objective at a district level is to make the clubs aware of the information and programs we have and offer assistance to enhance the Rotary experience for your clubs. Each club has its own culture and it is not the district's intent to force feed you with things you have to do. Through the District Governor, District Chairs and Assistant Governors, it is our intent to be a source of information, a gift to you so you can “Be a Gift to the World.” We want you to access this gift and use the tools inside that the District has assembled to fit with your club’s culture and possibly get outside your comfort zone and try something new to enhance your club.
As with any organization there needs to be tangible goals. Our District isn't different, so let me outline the Primary goals our District would like to achieve with your help for the Rotary Year 2015-16:
To increase membership to 3,150 Rotarians in our District. As of our update on 15 May 2015, we are currently at 2,985 Rotarians in our District. In order for us to achieve this goal, we need to do what we can to increase our membership. From now until June 30th of 2016, we need to gain 165 Rotarians in the next 14 months. I know with your support, and the commitment of the District Membership Committee, we can accomplish this goal.
Support the Rotary Foundation. We want to raise:
$315,000.00 for Annual Giving. We can obtain the Annual Giving goals through the Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY) program. This means that per capita, every Rotarian in your club participates, and on average is equal to or greater than $100 per member. In conjunction with the EREY, we would like to have 15 New Paul Harris Society Members in our District.
$65,000.00 for Permanent Fund. Have at least one member of your club be a new Benefactor (give at least $1,000 to the Permanent Fund from your estate or in cash). The principal of these funds are never used, just the interest gained is used for Rotary.
$105,000.00 for End Polio Now (Previously Polio Plus). Finally, the End Polio Now objective is to raise $35.00 per District member. We can achieve this through an independent club fund raising activity that is in conjunction with a Polio awareness day. We are so close to ending Polio, only three countries are left to complete our objective and we need to support that financially until the job is finished.
Do one new thing in your club. There is a lot that Rotary has to offer, so utilize the District Gift Box or something innovative that you think will impact your community, district or the world in a positive way. I think we get complacent in our routine when we can be doing more, so please get outside your comfort zone and bring something fresh to your club and Rotary.
Utilize the Presidential Citation and District Awards to set your Club Goals. The activities identified in these documents are in my opinion the best gift for a President of a club to set focus for the upcoming year. The key in utilizing these tools is to meet with your committees as soon as possible after PETS. Analyze what you do currently that meets the criteria and what you can do to meet the criteria you currently are not participating in. We as a District are here to support you and give input if you would like us to help, either through me as your District Governor, your Assistant Governor or District Committee Chairs.
As we start this journey of leadership in Rotary for the year 2015 – 2016, I want to express my gratitude for what your talents will bring to Rotary and the friendships we will forge throughout this upcoming year. Have success and more importantly: have fun doing it!

The seminar will be of particular interest to all club executives in particular those with responsibility for Foundation issues and Membership Growth. The agenda for the seminar is shown below.
Your Rotary Club is focused on making a positive difference in your community as well as around the world. You know that if you Club had more money you could mount or improve a project that is really needed.
Well, another big day in the life of a District Governor has arrived. July 1, 2015 I officially became a Past District Governor. The journey to PDG was absolutely incredible. Thank you District 5790 for the rare, and incredible, opportunity to be your District Governor for the past year. Thank you, more specifically, to the, now, Past Presidents that helped to make 2014-2015 a fantastic year for their respective clubs as well as to my Lieutenant Governor Deb Wey District Secretary Darhyl Ramsey, my Assistant Governors, and my committee chairs for doing their part to make the past year successful.
I’m pleased to introduce Rotary Global Rewards – a new member benefit program that offers discounts on products and services like travel, hotels, dining and entertainment. Rotary Global Rewards is designed to make membership even more rewarding for Rotarians and is an exciting way Rotary can give back to those who give so much. Rotary Global Rewards help Rotarians:
The Foundation Committee has a very busy month planned. First of all we are being reminded to submit our District and Global Grant proposals by August 1st. Then they have announced this years Foundation and Membership Seminar being held on August 22nd and finally, they are working on the Foundation Gala being held November 13th in the beautiful Hurst Convention Center.
Three Polio cases reported this week. See the updated numbers attached.
What is that Polio Picture? It's a beautiful END POLIO NOW light-up in Pakistan. In the first half of 2015 we have seen the lowest number of cases ever during this period, with just 33 cases in 2 countries as opposed to 122 cases in 9 countries at this time in 2014. This progress needs to be maintained through hard work to end transmission in endemic countries and to prevent future outbreaks. And I wonder Could 2015-16 be the year of the final Polio case?
Want to Grow your Club? Dave Hurt (District Membership Coordinator)
I was recently asked by a new incoming club president my thoughts on growing a dynamic club. My answer was to look at the club as a building with four pillars that provided the strength of a good foundation for long-term success.
PDG Larry Petrash Recognizes District 5790 Rotarians
for their outstanding service
We all recall fondly PDG Larry's visits to our clubs as he encouraged us with the Hummingbird Parable.
As the parable goes the hummingbird was trying to put out a forest fire with one drop of water at a time.
The bear said, "What are you doing you fool".
Without stopping, Dukdukdiya, the hummingbird, looked down at... all of the animals. She said, “I am doing what I can.”
Congratulations to the 11 Recipients of the Hummingbird Award!
Conference attendees were greeted with flags from all over the world including our Rotary Flag
District Rotarians Serve, Laugh, and Learn
If you didn’t make it to the 2015 District Conference in Wichita Falls, here is what you missed.
Rotarians had the opportunity to serve local nonprofit organizations, enjoy moving and even hilarious entertainment, and learn more about Rotary on the local as well as international level.
The district attendance figures are available online in the District 5790 Website.

Whether within local communities or around the world, Rotarians are an organization of community leaders and professionals who want to give back…who want to give a helping hand to others…who want to contribute to society by being part of worldwide philanthropic efforts that benefit humanity…and who expect nothing in return.
Think of all the elementary, middle, high school, and college young people who have been touched with Rotary scholarships…with sponsorship of school camps, RYLA, Interact and Rotoract Clubs…with local community projects…and on and on. Then reflect on the role that each of us as past, present, and future Rotarians, share in the process of immunizing about one-third of the world’s population against polio…preventing millions of people from the paralytic disease of the polio virus. How good does that make you feel? It is reasonable to say that “lending a helping hand” is an action that responds to some degree of need or conflict. Peace is broadly defined in terms of resolution of individual physical or mental conflict, often found in war-time conditions. Doesn’t the gift of a wheelchair help remove the conflict resulting from lack of mobility, and subsequently represent an act of goodwill and peace? Can we not therefore conclude an individual act of peace was performed with every project Rotarians do…and from the thousands of projects from thousands of clubs just like ours? Rotary has earned the reputation of responding to people of all nations in need, and to helping build a better and a more peaceful world. Worldwide programs encompass Six Rotary Areas of Focus, should make us all proud to be part of a massive worldwide humanitarian effort to improve human conditions. History and the book of records may someday reveal how much these humanitarian acts of kindness contributed to a world of peace. Regardless, and even more important, we all know Rotarians will continue to lend a helping hand everywhere they can…it is part of our DNA. Now the membership message…you knew it was coming didn’t you? Obviously we need more hands to sustain our clubs long-term, to increase fellowship and friendships, and to continue the good work being done. And isn’t increasing membership a goal in each of our clubs…and isn’t that a primary strategy of Rotary International…to grow in numbers and good deeds. As Rotarians, each of us has that responsibility and each of us need to do our part to make it happen! When we tell others how Rotarians lend a helping hand, how we enjoy weekly fellowship and hearing from local leaders and community programs, we will accomplish this objective. As we each pursue our Rotary paths, a “well done and thank you” to each of you for every single thing you do as a Rotarian and as a humanitarian…for embracing the responsibility that each of us have to reach out to others to become part of our Rotary “family”…and for lending a helping hand to anyone in need.
