Detective Clint Murphy, Double Oak Police Department
During the years 2015-2016 the Town of Double Oak experienced a substantial amount of identity theft based crime. During 2016, 31 false income tax returns were filed for refunds not due the recipient. Detective Murphy developed an investigative plan and worked tirelessly with I.R.S. Denton County, D. A., other municipal, corporate and banking investigators to develop leads, obtain evidence, freeze stolen funds and identify and arrest multiple suspects. After the conclusion of over a year long investigation, Det. Murphy had identified U.S. based tax preparers responsible for at least 8 of the Double Oak filings (information forwarded to the IRS for investigation); recovered $13,355 of stolen currency; and identified by name and address well over a dozen more suspects involved in various identity theft fraud schemes. As a result of Det. Murphy’s efforts, 1 suspect has been arrested in Harris County; 1 suspect arrested in Mesquite and prosecuted in Denton County; 1 suspect arrested in Kansas; and 1 suspect arrested in Oregon. Detective Murphy’s ability to work with multiple jurisdictions, obtain video and computer evidence from numerous institutions and service providers and prepare timely and effective case reports is a credit to the law enforcement profession.
